"In Jesus Christ, there is no distance or separation between the medium and the message:
it is the one case where we can say that the medium and the message are fully one and the same."

Thinking Beyond Content: Carey & Communication

In the eighth video of Adam Niven' s #FBLiveVideoChallenge for Media Theology Adam again engages with the idea of thinking beyond content. In this live video he explains the work of James W Carey in dividing communication theory in two main categories.
Those who are more focussed on information transmission. Where the focus is on moving a message from point a to point b. Which fall much more into a content focussed mindset. And those that fall into the cultural or ritual mindset. Where there is much more focus on the participation in particular cultural rituals that shape communities and the people in those communities. In this instance the focus is less on the specific content, and more on the ritual in which one participates. For example, it's not so much about what's in the sermon, but more about how the sermon is shared, and through participating in that ritual regularly, what kind of community is created.
