"In Jesus Christ, there is no distance or separation between the medium and the message:
it is the one case where we can say that the medium and the message are fully one and the same."
Marshall McLuhan

We're all living in the Global Village:But We're Still not a Tribe

The term Global Village was coined by Marshall McLuhan. In the The Gutenberg Galaxy he  wrote:

The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village.

Yet what McLuhan never suggested was that the Global Village was inhabited by a singular cohesive tribe. The emphasis was that the "tribal drums" of the electronic age bring together those who previously were not. That the information from everywhere returns the sensorium bias to acoustic space - rather than the linear bias of print.
It's interesting to see how different tribes form within this same global village. One recent experience of this was the intersection of the Rugby Union World Cup and the earthquake that hit Pakistan and Afghanistan over this weekend.

Whilst I do love sport, and love the spectacle of the game. Particularly when those games are at the highest level, such as with world cup semi-finals. It is an strange phenomena to know the excitement of millions as they gather around the world (mostly in front of TVs) to participate in cheering home their team. To know the level of palpable excitement at victory or the emotionally crushing feeling of failure at defeat. To see the money that has been invested in creating such a spectacle...

And then to hear the tribal drums of an earthquake rocking a nation and region to which Rugby Union means little to nothing...

As one tribe enjoys a spectacle, another is shaken to its core...

And I can't help but wonder which tribe I prefer to belong to...
