it is the one case where we can say that the medium and the message are fully one and the same."

#mcprobe: Is the Church in the West prone to Activewear Syndrome?

With the change in circumstances for our family this year in moving from Perth WA to the Sunshine Coast QLD I've had to take on more of the school drop offs and pick ups. Which is fine, but there is this strange phenomenon that I know I'm not the only one who's noticed.

In fact I couldn't believe that the "dropping of my kids in my activewear" was missing from this great take off clip. I mean, I guess for some women that are heading straight to the gym afterwards, they get a leave pass. But for those that turn up in their activewear for morning drop offs (with the makeup all done as well) and then are at pickups in the afternoon in the very same get up? Either: they have to have a pretty mean washing schedule; they just don't sweat at the gym, or the activewear is more of a fashion statement choice.Which, got me thinking.

Is the western Church suffering a little from active wear syndrome?

Have we forgotten what it looks like to live Christ and instead trade that off for living a "Christian" life? Where we're more interested in giving the impression of being active than genuinely being active. And where we like the benefits of the toning look of our Christian "activewear" more than the pain of working out? There just seems to be an endless amount of Christian "stuff" available. So much so that there are whole capital industries built on it. And it may be doing little more than making it look like we dig working out in the name of Christ.
