This weekend we had a couple we'd met recently over for a meal. We met them through the release of a documentary about their journey in starting Milk and Honey - an Australian organisation operating an English School in Sihanoukille, Cambodia. Having been to Cambodia ourselves a number of times working alongside Serve Cambodia it was easy to be able to talk about a shared experiences. One of which was having to hand wash laundry.
This is a shared experience you too can have. You don't even need to travel anywhere else in the world to join in the experience. Simply stop using your washing machine for week and hand wash your clothes in buckets instead. You'll very quickly find that your life changes dramatically.

A Shared Hand Washing Experience
We laughed as we shared about how you learn that leaving washing to pile up somewhere over time - even just a couple of days - has a massive impact on the resultant washing day. We mused on the actual physical strength that is required to do the different steps in a hand wash cycle. We were super thankful we didn't have to carry the water to the washing or the washing to the water, like so many in our world still do. And we shared about the guilt free use of a laundry service, where for a couple of dollars, you can get a mountain of washing done that on the odd occasion we used because buying back that time was amazingly valuable.
Washing Machines have a message
As our discussion went on, we were both reminded of this TED talk by Hans Rosling on the magic washing machine. Make a spare 10mins and be sure to watch this. A washing machine is a life changing medium, but if you've never lived without one, you won't appreciate the impact they have on lives.
And if you're super game, and up for a challenge, give it a go to not use your washing machine for a week. If you do, let me know how you experienced it in the comments below. I'm sure you'll find some great insight to share. What did you need to change so you could be sure you would be wearing clean clothes?
